Material

Arrows with questions – black, orange, blue. (the blue arrows say which? and what kind of?)
Circles – red, black, orange.
Triangles – black, blue. 
Prepared sentences which fit the analysis patterns. 
Teacher’s writing tray.  

Presentation and Exercises

Attributes 
  1. Invite the child to the lesson.  
  2. Ask the child to bring the large wooden symbol box.  
  3. Bring the writing tray. 
  4. Be sure that you bring the control sentence that you must write before the lesson, but do not show it to the child until the end. 
  5. Ask the child to take out all the symbols that he is familiar with and put them in their proper places on the table. 
  6. Introduce the child to the blue arrows.  
  7. “Can you read what that says?” 
  8. Place the blue arrows to the left, under the orange arrows. 
  9. Introduce the blue triangles. 
  10. Write a long sentence such as “Yesterday the lovely ballerina performed a special dance at our school.” 
  11. “Where do we start? That’s right, you got it, with the action.” 
  12. Wait for the child to cut out the word “performed” and for him to place it on the red symbol.  
  13. “You do the rest of the parts that you know.” 
  14. Once the child does all that he knows – who, what, where, when, to whom – show the child the blue arrows again, read the relevant one. 
  15. Place the blue arrow under the “ballerina” and the triangle at the end of the blue arrow. 
  16. “What kind of ballerina performed? Yes, the lovely ballerina.” 
  17. “Can you cut that word out?” 
  18. Wait for the child to place the word “lovely” on the blue triangle. 
  19. Be sure that “the” is on the circle with “ballerina” so that it says “the ballerina.” 
  20. Repeat this process for “a special dance.” 
  21. Be sure that “a” is on the circle with “dance” so that it says “a dance.” 
  22. Show that the adjective can be swapped in this situation and still make sense by transposing. 
  23. Ask the child to transpose. 
  24. Introduce the prepared slips for independent work, tray #3.  
Appositions 
  1. Invite the child to the lesson. 
  2. Ask the child to bring the large wooden symbol box.  
  3. Bring the writing tray. 
  4. Be sure that you bring the control sentence that you must write before the lesson, but do not show it to the child until the end. 
  5. Ask the child to take out all the symbols that he is familiar with and put them in their proper places on the table. 
  6. Take out the black triangles and place them on the table.  
  7. Write a long sentence that has adjectives for nouns, such as: 
    “Last night, Carlos the chef expertly prepared tasty enchiladas for his regular customers in his famous restaurant.” 
  8. Ask the child to cut out and symbolize as much of the sentence as he can by himself. (he is able to do everything, except for the black triangle which you will properly introduce next) 
  9. “Carlos the what? That’s right, you got it, Carlos the chef.” 
  10. Ask the child to cut out “the chef.” 
  11. Place a blue arrow underneath “Carlos” and place the black triangle at the end of the arrow’s point. 
  12. “Can you put ‘the chef’ on this triangle?” 
  13. Transpose. 
  14. Introduce the prepared slips for independent work, tray #4. 

Purpose

Improve the child’s reading, writing and speaking through analyzing sentences.

Notes

You can get sentences from books that the child may be familiar with. 
Until this lesson, all the arrows came from the verb. 
Once you get to the attribute, arrows can extend from nouns. 
Prepare the control slips before presentation. 
Accumulate a collection of sentences to keep the interest of the child and to offer new challenges.
